Globally, about 11 million tonnes of PKE are produced each year, with over 90% exported (Indonesia is the world’s largest producer). PKE typically contains roughly 15–18% crude protein and is exceptionally rich in minerals: recent analysis found PKE has significantly higher levels of Mg, P, Fe, Zn and other micronutrients than tropical pastures. In practice, feeding 2–5 kg/day of PKE per head has been shown to maintain cattle performance and even raise milk fat content in dairy cows.
